It’s National Coming Out Day
And I have something I need
To say!
I am a women
Who’s seen twenty-one years of marriage to a loving man.
We are perfectly typical and average in nearly every way:
A cat, a dog, a couple of cars, and
Two really nice kids (With some pretty good grades.)
We have jobs, a mortgage, grocery lists,
And other bills too. All of these things are part
Of our perfectly typical and average days —just like you!
The fact is you’d never really know
If I didn’t take this time to stop and say:
None of these things make me straight.
“No shame! You were just born that way!”
To this, I agree with all they say.
But, what if one day you woke up to find something had…
changed?
That happened to me around age forty-three.
I started flirting on-line with a woman
Nearly as crazy as me.
Years have past since then, and I am
Still married to a man: have a cat, a dog, a couple cars,
And two really nice kids (With some pretty good grades).
We still have jobs, a mortgage, grocery lists,
And all those other bills too. (Even though
I am no longer quite the same.)
So, do I really have to be born that way?
Or, maybe, could it just be ok to suddenly say; “I want to enjoy life
And love in a richer, more diverse way!”?
As for my husband,
What does he say about all of these things?
“Oh, dear woman even now I love you still— to this very day!
Where will we go from here?
It’s hard to know, we’ll just make it up along the way.
I guess it’s too late for you to repent
To save yourself now.
But as they say, who’d want to anyhow?
So, welcome to the club!
At least now you’ll understand
The deep burden of every man’s pain,
For when it comes to loving women…
Nearly every single one is completely
Insane!”
