Soul Spice

Oh, how the world will try.
But don’t cha dare let it tame you,
You strange wild thing!

You’ve got all that soul spice
And hot liquid lightning
Coursing through your veins!

A heart too unbound for the
Trappings of a common cage.
Mistress of your own wild fate!

Bright stars, dark velvet skies
And warm firelight.
That’s the life for you!

Now you dance and whirl all through the night,
Thrilling the Universe with your
Sweet soul spice!

I want to honor my youngest sons contribution. One afternoon over a year ago he was playing by himself. I was eavesdropping on his imaginary dialogue and overheard him say: “…then he added one part soul spice”

I loved that phrase so much!

It whispered to me a recipe, an ingredient of this wild, gypsy woman who’s always lived in my imagination. I tried to write this as a recipe for a while. But I could never make the words fit the images floating in my mind. So I just let her sit there in the back of my mind. Then some months ago I heard “Escoutas” on a Carolina Chocolate Drops recording. (The vocals and rhythm are so rich and delicious in this version, I highly recommend a listen)  The spirit of the music spoke so strongly to me about this wild gypsy woman and all her soul spice, it came back to life again. As I wrote and thought on it I was very curious about the meaning of these lyrics I didn’t understand. I wanted it to fit. To my joy I found this video performance explaining the lyrics. It was a song made just for her!

I hope you enjoyed a peek at the whirling dervish gypsy that has always lived in my heart and imagination.
