Rocky Mountain State Games 2013 –Ashley Stephens

This year I had the great pleasure of getting to lift with a young woman, Ashley Stephens, and I wanted to brag about her a bit. She’s a Senior (21+) +75k lifter, and she totaled 173k/380# at this meet. And to look at the weekends results, she appears to have lifted the heaviest total out of all the female lifters competing in the 2013 RMSG, too!

Here’s video of her last lift of the meet –it was very exciting! She kept stopping the clock to add more weight to the bar, she did that at least four times –until the bar was loaded with 100k/220#. So, by the time she walked on to the platform, we were all on the edge of our seats, eager to see her make this lift.

So dynamic.

She is such a bright, cheerful, and gentle person in conversation, and yet she has this enthusiastic, raw, aggressive force just below the surface! That mixture of energies makes it just so much fun to watch her lift!

Without knowing any specific details about her weightlifting history, I am pretty certain that she is in the early stages of her weightlifting career, but with all of her innate talent there is no doubt that she will be moving on to bigger and better weights and competitions in the future. I really hope she sticks with it, and that I get more chances to lift with her in future RMSG meets.
