Strawberry-Ruhbarb

My Grandma made the best rhubarb pies from the rhubarb that grew like crazy in the back of her yard. One year, 1991, she made Strawberry-Rhubarb freezer jam with it. I probably shouldn’t admit this publicly, but my family had a weird thing about canning food and putting it up. Not that that’s weird. It’s that they’d make A LOT of food one year and then not for several years after. Well, she would make so much food and was such an expert canner that the food -swear to god- was still very tasty years after you’d want to admit that it was even on the shelf.

I don’t remember when I found this last jar of jam buried deep in her freezer -long after she’d passed on. I let it thaw and gave it a whirl. It was flawless. This jam was the best on vanilla ice cream. I let the nearly empty jar sit in the back of my fridge -longer than I’d really want to admit…well, till last week- because I couldn’t really let go of the last food that was really made by her.

I ‘ve been gently soaking the jar for a week now, trying to get it clean with out ruining that little paper label with her handwriting.
